Following my test of the Baldo TTX 460 Driver I lay my hands on the matching 3W. First impression looking at it, I notice that the head profile is very shallow. Love it! Shallower heads give me the confidence inspiring look when I put the club down for a shot off the fairway. From experience, I know that even if I catch it somewhat low on the face, the resulting shot is far less damaging than off of a deep faced head. I rarely use 3 wood off the tee and so I am not too worried about teeing it up. Follow the jump for more …
At 156 cc, I would say that the size of this 15 deg 3W head is perhaps a tad on the small size of mid size. 156cc sounds small but remember you are talking about a pretty flat looking shallow head. The foot print definitely looks bigger than the advertised volume.
The sole design follows that of what they did on the TTX driver very “Batman” like. Again the weight screw on this fairway is accompanied by a “Power Plate” which is CNC milled brushed stainless steel. The contrast between the surrounding black and the stainless steel weight plate stands out as a design accent. Kinda cool!
At address, the midsize footprint is nice. To me it looked a bit more open face than I would be comfortable with. Though I am not a slice hitter, I’d want the face to be more neutral looking. On the other hand, if you are one of those players who struggle with misses to the left, I am sure you’d appreciate this open faced setting.
Let’s give it a hit. First observation is that this 3W is really easy to launch. it is high launching … but not ballooning from high spin or anything. With Ti fairway woods. they are in general higher trajectory loft for loft compared to their steel head siblings. This is because Ti fairway woods today have similar construction to driver heads with lower and deeper CG which allows for higher launch and lower spin. Personally, I am still old school in that the lower trajectory of steel heads seem more natural to me. Having said that, I have no doubt of the higher potential of producing longer distance using Ti fairways.
Older Ti heads for me had sort of a common issue for me which is the sound and feel. they used to be a bit to high pitched and did not provide good feel off the face. Well this TTX fairway really flipped that thought 180 deg. It has to be one of the most solid and best feeling Ti fairway woods to date. No tingy sound on this one. It has a nice springy feel to it too. I wish all DAT55G clubs felt like this!! But what about distance? Rest assured, thanks to the DAT55G face, the distance is as long as any Ti heads out there. Because of the smaller size compared to Ryoma F-3 or Maruman Shuttle it’s probably not as forgiving , but if you are a mid-handicap or better player, you’d be fine with using this TTX Fairway Wood.
If you are in the market for a players Ti fairway wood that is also anti-left, I really think you should give this TTX fairway a closer look. Click here to Purchase or Learn More ( CLICK HERE )
