There are two schools of thought on putter head weight. The first is that a heavier putter head works best on faster greens because it add’s stability to the shorter stroke that is needed.
The other theory is that lighter putter head weight is best for faster greens because it gives the golfer more delicate control.
I am on the side of heavier headed putters are better for slower greens because slower greens usually have longer grass and more bumpy’s and the heavier head puts a more powerful forward roll allowing the ball to push through and forward.
A recent issue of Golf Digest states that “a lighter putter under 340 grams works better on slower greens because you need to swing the putter head more”.
I began looking at Japan Tour Player bags and noticed they desire lighter weight putter heads for faster greens. On the PGA Tour it’s the same, not many 355+ gram head weights around. 340-350 is the norm. Please sound off in the poll and state your opinion in the comments section…

After a long time of going backwards and forwards I have settled on around 340g headweight for fast and slow, this suits me best. Oh played at 34″ so I guess this could be considered ‘medium?
….. never liked extremes me….. :-)
heavy on slow green my vote. light heads feel like the weight is in the grip.
The vote options need another 2 more options: Heavier for both slow and fast, and Lighter for both slow and fast. It’s all personal preference, and it all comes down to how you HIT it or ROLL it.
Also – if you had a heavier head with a LARGE FAT grip, it’s not going to feel the same as with a small, thin grip. Know what I mean? Or if you were to use a longer shaft as opposed to standard or short length putter. I mean you could have it as short of Phil, down almost to his knees, and with that same head, if you were to put a long shaft on it, it’s not even the same putter.
You have to find your own balance.

That is correct, there’s no right answer. It’s like reading a putt for a friend or partner in golf ….some guys putt firm take out break and others just want to die it in. To each his own! That’s my take….
It’s a pretty close poll.
I prefer the heavy head with small grip. I definitely have a nice touch and feel with this combination. Lighter heads I cannot stand. I have no control and yipping all over the place.
@takashi:
It’s no wonder why you have no control when using light weight. Putting muscles have memory too and you just have to give it time until it feels normal. Then you’ll think the heavy putter is too “controlling”.
No right answer like all putting questions, its down to the individual. I prefer heavy putter as i find it easier to swing smoothly and prevents me racing the club head.
