As the lengths of drivers get longer and longer with some even coming close to 47″, I just sit back and shake my head. Manufacturers who have maxed out at 0.83 COR, the maximum measurement for the amount of spring a driver face can create, are always looking for ways to increase distance. One way is to create a longer length driver. But as I know very well and have always said, a longer driver makes squaring up and hitting the sweet spot much harder. So if one cannot hit the sweet spot it does not matter if the driver is 46.5″ in length, the end result is probably a loss of distance or a terrible slice!
I am not a big person. I stand maybe 5′ 4″ and weight a paltry 53kg. I struggle to square up any driver longer than 45″ in length and admittedly can hit any driver 44″ or shorter further than any driver over 45″. I can simply square up and hit the sweet spot far more consistently resulting in solid contact and optimal distance. Sadly there are NO drivers that are 44″ or less unless 1. they are for ladies or 2. I build one.
Today my wish came true and no less from my favorite brand PRGR who announced the release of the PRGR EGG Impact PX-01 Driver. Those of you who follow my posts will know I am already a tremendous fan of the EGG Spoon fairway wood which is probably the favorite club in my bag now. Several customers have bought this same EGG Spoon and fallen in love with it. If this new EGG Impact performs anything like the Spoon, PRGR will have a winner. So why am I raving so radiantly about this EGG Impact?
IT’S STOCK LENGTH IS 43.5″!!!
That’s right. A 43.5″ driver that is not a ladies driver nor custom aftermarket built. A 43.5″ men’s driver directly from the manufacturer. In PRGR’s testing, the shorter 43.5″ club was able to produce higher ball speeds and more consistent center impact than drivers over 45″ in length. Not only was the length contributing to better impact and ball speeds but since the length is only 43.5″, in order for PRGR to meet swing weight of around D0-D1, they use a heavy head of over 206g and the extra weight according to PRGR increased ball speed by at least a meter per second.
I am dying to try this club and have already requested a demo from PRGR. The official release date is end of October with 9.5 and 10.5 lofts and flexes of M-37, M-40 and M-43 initially.
When the demo gets here you will see a full review!
If this driver is as good as the 15* 3 wood I have it is a winner for sure. Something I find rather interesting is the stock shaft in the 3 wood was a 1/2″ over standard in length. When I had the GD shaft installed it was installed at standard length and is now 1/2″ shorter than stock. I’m killing the 3 wood.
This is one driver I’ll be keeping an eye out for. I’ve got the 3 wood spoon on order and if it turns out to such an awesome club like everyone is saying, the Driver may soon follow the spoon into my bag.
Wondering if you’ve already had a chance to demo the driver and if it lives up to the hype of the Egg Spoon performance wise.
actually bought the egg driver.
when I brought to the fitters for re-gripping, I had the club checked and was told that the shaft length is 44 inches and the flex for the in-house M40 shaft is more S than R. I was told this was to reduce the kick from the 206g head.
Well it really depends on how your club fitter measures the length. Because there is no standard for length measurement, length can vary by 0.5″ from one source to another. Some clubmakers measure to where the heel of the club, some to where the lie begins and others to the center line from the shaft to sole. This is why 38.5″ at TM Japan is 38″ at Miura Giken.
M-40 is 40m/s and that’s 90mph which is Regular or Stiff/Regular by Japanese standards.
I’m just curious to know the weight of the M40 shaft fitted on PRGR’s Data 811 irons. I have a PRGR Data Wood with M40 shaft that weighs 57 gm. Is it the same as the M40 fitted to the irons?
