The Cleveland 588 wedge when prior to SRI Sports ” Srixon ” purchasing the brand used to be a “Form Forged” budget minded wedge for the U.S market.
Keep in mind that ” Form Forged” was actually carbon steel blend that was cast in a mold not a true forging by any means of the word.
When Srixon recently bought out Cleveland golf it was one of the first times we saw a Cleveland wedge produced of the quality it should have always been made of.
Non Plated 588 Forged
This September 19th get ready for the Japan Only Cleveland Tour Action 588 Forged non plated version produced for the expert player of soft S25C carbon. This new is the softest most rewarding and high quality manufactured wedge that Cleveland under any owner has ever produced. The 588 brand wedge over its long history has sold almost 350 million wedges and has been the #1 wedge for the past consecutive 11 years from 1998 – 2008. Available in 48, 50, 52, 56, 58, and 60* lofts ( notice no 54* ) its not priced anywhere near what most U.S consumers recognize a cleveland wedge to cost. This one when converted into dollars is almost 200 bucks each.
Non Plated = A Softer Impact
Most pro’s opt for wedges that are not plated for more feedback and sensation from the club. The plating is attractive and very durable but is another layer between the wedge itself and the ball, not to mention a very firm and hard layer. Black or copper style finish wedges also feel softer than say a chrome or satin plated wedge but when you simply polish the raw material in its original form there is nothing quite like it.
The down side is that the wedge will wear especially in areas near the ocean or high salt content in the air and humidity eventually becoming rusty if not taken care of. You may simply spray some Sword Oil, WD-40 or most other non abrasive oils after several uses to keep it in top shape. Once and a while you can use CLR or Coca Cola and even Vinegar to remove heavy caked on rust. Most pro golfers appreaciate the wear and natural tarnish of the wedge and some swear that it even further enhances the feel at impact.
