THE MIURA LIMITED PRODUCTION KM-701 – Katsuhiro Miura’s private label series
There are two Miura’s, Miura global which has aggressively expanded recently since it’s acquisition by Billionaire Howard Milstein and the Japan factory line up under the Miura Giken label. Both are equal and the same as far as quality goes with a few distinctions to be made in material choices and design selections. But whatever the case both Miura Global and Miura Giken are slanging some of Japan’s finest handmade golf clubs. No doubt!
Today we look at a limited production series designed by and made as the founder Katsuhiro Miura’s own private label. There are rumors he ground it but that has not been confirmed. The little red kanji signifies it is his own private brand series. Follow the jump to read on and see more pics…
The monthly production is limited to 100pcs and they must be reserved prior. Sold in 50/52/56/58 lofts as those are the most popular lofts desired in the Japanese golf market.
The bounce is on the high side at 11/13/14/16 so these are very friendly for softer more lush conditions. Versus the MG-R01 wedge which is Miura Japan’s flagship model the KM-701 is based on a similar shape yet is longer heel to toe with the CG 3mm closer to the toe than the heel.
Considering the bounce, cg and shape it is a forgiving players wedge. The top line is very thin, the offset is progressive and becomes onset in the 58* at an FP of 6 ( as seen in the photo above).
Hitting Impressions, I took the 58 out for a spin and absolutely love it. It’s forged of FE99.3% carbon steel and feels very soft and pure at impact fine vibrations is how I would describe it. The grooves are CNC milled, the face is flat unlike most pressed wedges and spin on par with many of the big OEM’s.
It features a wide sole that does not get in the way and a near perfectly rounded leading edge. Hard to beat a wedge-like this one as it ticks most of the boxes. I found it very easy to hit and stop the ball, it was excellent out of the rough. The only thing to consider in my opinion is that when you combine FP #6 aka onset with a CG toward the heel you have a wedge that promotes a cut over straight.
