A few weeks ago we reviewed the Grandista DAT55G Driver head and today we have the same model except with an SP700 material face and silver highlights on the crown and face, So why produce 2 drivers both with the same design yet just different face materials? Its really about preference of feel, Yoshida-san former tour pro and founder/designer of Grandista was able to produce a slightly softer feel and sound at impact with the SP700 model yet with the same CT “Characteristic of Time” that the ball is compressed against the face and in this case it’s VERY high at CT=257 for both the DAT55G model and the SP700 model. Yesterday I was able to hit both models together so please follow the jump for what I found the difference was…
First off it’s a top notch club, it’s medium/high launch takes just enough spin off the shot to help straighten but not too much, I have my sample shafted with the new Fujikura Evolution II 661 shaft which is jam packed with tech and materials not to mention a good cost effective choice, this combo produced a mid/high trajectory that was very straight compared to most, not Jbeam straight but it also has more spin than the JB’s do.
It’s got a shape that works and look good personally I like the way the black finish face looks in the DAT model but this SP700 model I like for feel and sound between the two for sure, The Sp700 just sounds a more softer crunch, maybe a hair more hollow where the DAT55G version feels hotter but that doesn’t mean longer its a harder crunch at impact and a lower pitch sound. Outside of that the sole does look better in Black. Putting all that aside I think I would go with the SP700 and most likely stick with one of these EVO II’s if on a budget and of course a Sanki or 7D shaft with no budget.
At address I would say its among the top 5 out today, rounded just the right way but doesnt look oversized or even remotely closed at address, one of the best parts is when ordering with TSG due to our direct relations with Yoshida-san we can get very custom specs similar to what we are able to offer for our J-Beam clubs, for example need a 9.25* loft? no problem, 0.75* closed club face for sure this is fine. Head weights go up to 200g custom requested.
Just a little bit more about Grandista, while currently they only have 1 driver in 2 versions the new fairway wood is on it’s way and looks to be promising with same key design theories as the driver but also a fairway with DAT55G face materials. TSG will be adding the Type-S Grandista Driver to the proshop this week, if you need custom spec or custom builds please contact us directly at [email protected] to help you figure out the best specs and options for your game.
