The finest traditional all natural lacquerware is known in Japan as “URUSHI Lacquerware”. It is the heart and soul of Japanese hand crafting techniques and has been a large part of Japanese daily life for thousands of years. Archeologists in Japan have found lacquered objects such as combs and pendants older than six thousand years old.
The value of a piece of lacquerware starts with the materials used to make it. While URUSHI Lacquerware is made of all natural woods, it is not uncommon to see lower quality and imitation lacquerware produced using plastic combined with wood powder due to the high cost and a shortage of natural woods. These other products lack the workmanship and quality that URUSHI Lacquerware possess.
“URUSHI” which is lacquer in Japanese, is obtained from the sap of the lacquer tree. A single tree can only produce a few grams of resin each time it is harvested. There are many steps involved in crafting authentic URUSHI Lacquerware requiring the skills of several different artists, and sometimes up to ten years, to complete. The precision grinding and tedious hand painting techniques have been preserved over time and passed down from generation to generation.
