I must have dedicated at least 4 or 5 posts on this blog to PRGR’s EGG Spoon including my original review here and an updated video review earlier this year here. That’s how long the Spoon has been around and how good it actually is. Golf Digest Japan’s June issue had a feature called 200y Approach Club Catalog showcasing standout new model fairway woods and utilities (I’ll only cover the FW’s here) and I was surprised to find the EGG one of clubs in the catalog. The EGG Spoon was released in early summer of 2008 making it the oldest club in the group which were placed into different categories based on distance and forgiveness as follows.
ULTRA Distance 3W: Unrivaled Distance Performance
Distance 3W: 2 On Par 5 Club
Forgiving 3W: The choice over the driver on narrow Par 4’s.
Distance 5W: The 200y+ 5W
Forgiving 5W: Who said fairway woods are difficult?
Five amateur golfers representing swing speed ranges and types of players (ie average golfer, senior golfer, athlete golfer, power golfer and trendy golfer) and 2 pro golfers took part in the testing. So let’s get straight to the point since you’ve already seen the title of this post. Only ONE fairway wood ranked in the ULTRA Distance 3W category and yes you guessed it, the PRGR EGG Spoon. The pro testers noted, that the EGG is not only easily the longest 3 woods around, it is also one of the most forgiving. Even with it’s 13* option, it is still easy to get in the air and out carries and out runs most higher lofted 3 woods.

Following behind the EGG Spoon in the Distance 3W category were Yamaha’s Inpres X D Power Spoon, Sri Sports’ New XXIO, Callaway’s New Legacy and PRGR’s RED 505. All top fairway woods for 2010. In the Forgiving 3W category we saw the MacGregor NV-F Type 1, Royal Collections SFDIII, Yonex’s Nextage Type Ti, Tourstage’s 2010 ViQ, Nike’s Machspeed Round FW, Taylormade’s Burner Superfast and Tourstage’s 2009 X-Drive GR.
Moving on to the 5 woods, the Distance 5W category featured the Callaway Diablo Edge Red, Sri Sports’ New XXIO and Royal Collection’s BBD’s 304T. All three 5 woods were touted as creating strong big carry balls and 200y+ performance even for slower swingers or seniors.
The Forgiving 5 Wood category featured the MacGregor NV-F Type 2, Ping G15, Yamaha Inpres X D FW, Cobra’s S2 and Yonex’s Nextage Type St. The bottom line is that there is a fairway wood model out there for everyone. Fairway wood designs are easier and easier to hit and many produce the much needed distance on that second shot for the average golfer, or even replace the driver off the tee when things aren’t going well with the 1W. Seeing articles like these still showing the PRGR EGG Spoon as the 3W to beat makes me very happy that I have kept in in my bag all this time and refused the many offers I get to sell it from readers and customers (at least 2-3 requests every week!)
Don’t understand why would people need to buy your Egg?… is this no longer being made?…. How does this compare to the Yamaha Spoon?….. I’ve been using a Yonex Rekin 14 degree for about 10 years, very solid but thought it might be time to change.
I guess people are always looking for a good deal in a used club as the Spoon is relatively high priced due to it’s titanium materials (as I noted in my previous reviews it’s like a small driver). Plus mine is shafted with a tour Basarra F53. The EGG Spoon is still a current model and very much available. I’ve talked about the Yamaha Spoon a few times in the blog. A nice club and also rather long and forgiving but I prefer the EGG or i would have switched. (^_^)
I’ve had a couple of offers for mine. Only if and when they update it will I even consider switching. This is the best 3 wood I have ever played. I know I’m wasting my time (and money) even trying to find something better.
I’m playing the 5 and 9 wood also. Money clubs.
Your Message@eylee:
I don’t think is made anymore. I can’t find any information for getting one.
As noted in the post it was released in 2008.
It has since been replaced by a newer model which we have posted about many time here and in the forum as the new reigning champ.
